spring semester beginning soon

January 14 begins the Spring 2008 semester with my next course PSYC 101 General Psychology. This is a fully-online, Internet-based course that meets January 14th to March 9th.

Even though this is a fully online, Internet-based course, it is not an online, self-study course with a due date at the last day of scheduled class. This course has firm weekly due dates has specified in the syllabus.  Although the students and the instructor are not tied down to specific times of day, we all adhere to a weekly schedule that includes many activities, including discussions, assignments, quizzes, etc.

This is an undergraduate course with no lectures. However, it appears imperative that keeping up with the weekly readings is a must. There are two chapters that must be read each week. Some weeks there are three chapters to read. Due to the nature of this course, my instructor has imposed deadlines will not be extended, so completing my work on time is imperative. If I miss an assignment or activity, I would have to work even harder to earn the maximum number of points on all subsequent activities. Extra credit is not being made available in this course.

Here is a point breakdown for PSYC 101 General Psychology:

Discussion boards (2)  200 pts.
Interactive Assignments (4) 200 pts.
Exams (4) 600 pts.

Total 1000 pts, with 900-1000 = A.

The discussion board assignments are a forum for the student to post his or her findings on the stated topics as well as an opportunity to add his or her opinion as appropriate. Also, this will foster a sense of community as each student is required to respond to each group member’s discussion board posting.

Interactive assigments are designed to enhance the learning experience through the use of videos, interactive simulations as well as other online links. These are 1-2 page papers that are required to be written in APA format and turned in via the assigments link in Blackboard.

Blackboard is a course management system that is a critical component in conducting a fully-online, Internet-based course. We have to regularly use and monitor the blackboard site in order to participate in class activities. Unless otherwise noted, all materials submitted to our Instructor will also be done via Blackboard.
