seo is not web design
Webmaster December 1st, 2007
I was reading an interesting discussion on Craigslist, and decided to put in my two cents. What seems good to a website designer is not always good for the website! This is why many people get oversold by a web designer or web design firm by getting a flash based web site. Have you ever seen a flash based web site ranking in the top three? If anyone has, please let me know. Chances are they are spamming the search engines to get that ranking. From design to SEO, coding to linking, a web designer really needs to know their stuff!
There are too many SEO firms charging a $50,000 fee for their services, thus ripping off their clients by not delivering any results. There are some SEO people charging $500 for their fee, but require some sort of performance bonus for their efforts.
There are SEO people that do not know squat about web design. There are web designers that do not know squat about SEO. There are those rare hybrids that are both web designers and have good SEO knowledge and experience. These people are the true practicioners of SEO, as SEO is a practicioner oriented field. It is a lot of reading the blogs, participating in SEO forums, and practicing what you learn by trial and error; figuring out what works best and what doesn’t work.
