Future Scaping HR

Webmaster September 11th, 2008

Human Resources can find it roots by looking no further than the purchasing department. From the beginning, hiring and firing people, the traditional core of Human Resources functions, was done by the purchasing agent. The thinking behind this was that purchasing agents procured the land, equipment, materials, and as a extension of this the people to ensure proper functioning of the business. To an extent of this attitude that people where to be purchased, unions arouse to protect the interest of the worker. To negotiate with the unions, companies adapted by having their own representatives, giving rise to the labor relations function within HR.

Ethics and HR

Webmaster September 11th, 2008

Ethics commonly refers to the rules or principles that define right and wrong conduct. Many people believe that we are currently suffering from an ethics crisis. Behaviors that were once thought unacceptable — lying, cheating, misrepresenting, covering up mistakes — have become in many people’s eyes acceptable or necessary practices.

The Management Of Workplace Relationships

Webmaster April 22nd, 2008

In recent years the corporate workforce has become more diversified in gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. As a consequence the workforce at most major corporations is now more reflective of the general population than it was in the past. Yet the issue of diversity in the workplace is often not addressed or, in some cases, overlooked by management. Of particular interest is the management of interpersonal relationships of both heterosexual and homosexual employees in the workplace.

Exit Interviews

Webmaster November 10th, 2007

For some reason, a month ago, I have been receiving emails about what an exit interview is. Apparently, when I looked into how many companies actually do an exit interview, it is less than 10 percent.  In times of when companies want to reduce the amount of voluntary turnover, the turnover where your employees leave the company for better opportunities elsewhere, one would think companies would conduct these exit interviews.

John Steven Niznik, wrote an excellent article about what is an exit interview. An exit interview is a one time occurrence at the end of employment. Most of the time the goal is to find out why the employee left. Beyond the basic front answer. Ex-employee alumni group is where the ex-employer keeps track (mails, emails, calls, takes to lunch, etc) of prior employees that they would want to rehire. There has to be some decision made at some point as to what the criteria are for the alumni group because you only want to expend energy on those that the company wants back. So while they are related the 2nd group should be much smaller than the first unless you have major retention issues.

Majority of Executives Would Pass On Being Self-Employed

Webmaster October 13th, 2007

Although most people dream of being their own boss, a majority of executives said that they would pass on the opportunity of being self-employed. Sixty-five percent of 150 senior executives surveyed by Robert Half Management Resources said that they would not choose to be self-employed, while only 32 percent said they would consider taking the plunge (Although this study appered to be a little bias when looking at it). According to Paul McDonald of Robert Half Management Resources, “some executives see more opportunity and security in their corporate roles than in venturing out on their own.”

Building Sustainable Organizations

Webmaster May 22nd, 2005

Sustainability is the ability to create new ways to live and prosper while ensuring an equitable, healthy future for all people and the planet. That is the mission of The Natural Step organization.

To build a sustainable organization, requires knowledge of our ecosystem. All orgnizations should be built on the model of “Take-Make-Waste.” Take-Make-Waste is a model based on open systems theory. It demonstrates that all organizations take in resources that come from the earth, goes into the organization where it is transformed into a product, and eventually turns into waste. When people don’t want a particular product no more, it goes into landfills. Landfills are already reaching their limits. What can organizations do to reduce this type of waste? How can organizations be designed to contribute to the reduction of this type of waste?

Visit The Natural Step to learn how organizations can be designed to create a sustainable world. This web site is best used in conjunction with the book “Beyond The Limits” by Meadows.
