Bogus Ads On Craigslist

Nick Roy February 1st, 2008

I just stumbled up on a bogus ad on craigslist. After talking with Sheila Herrera, HR Director for the Miami Science Museum, she has confirmed that there are no web design positions with her company. She has currently forwarded the link over to the IT department to look into the matter. A bogus ad such as this makes the Miami Science Museum looks bad for when they do have a legitimate job opening.

Craigslist is a great free site for posting ads, but this goes to show that there are numerous bogus job ads on the site. Job seekers, recruiters, and employers should beware of this scam.

The real costs of getting a job

Nick Roy November 18th, 2007

Experience.com recently did a survey about the real costs of getting a job.  According to Experience.com, the web has made looking for a job easier and less expensive than it once was. But the “real cost” of finding a job remains time. Some of the tangible costs respondents noted include:

  • Interview-appropriate clothing (27%)
  • Travel and lodging (24%)
  • Research (19%)

Be prepared to spend time and money. That is the message that Experience.com survey is sending out to job seekers. However, this really only works for the passive job seeker. Active job seekers don’t have the luxury of time and money since they are actively looking for a job. Most active job seekers are only in the position to take the first job offer that comes along. Whereas passive job seekers can take their time, use the networking tools, such as Itzbig, the dynamic network for quality career connections, to find their next career opportunity. The passive job seeker has more time and money to research their prospective companies that are on their list which will result in a much more productive interview.

Search & apply on all top job sites at once!

Nick Roy November 18th, 2007

Are you tired of going to several job sites every day and having to search each one separately? Do you dread submitting your resume & cover letter OVER and OVER for every single job you apply to? Do you hate having to keep track of which jobs from which sites you applied to? Now there’s a new service called MyJobHunter that solves all that and gets you more interviews!

The recruiting industry is a hypercompetitive industry with new job search sites popping up almost daily. MyJobHunter instantly searches all major job sites for jobs matching your criteria. Next, you’ll review a list of job matches and put check marks next to the ones you like. Then, press a single button and your resume is sent to ALL the jobs you selected. You can even tell it to search and apply to job matches after you’ve logged off. If you feel that you can simplify your job search with MyJobHunter and beat your competition to the jobs, then try them out.

My concern with MyJobHunter, is that it is just another Monster/CareerBuilder job search site. I personally cannot see the unique selling proposition. With the trend in job search sites moving towards job fit profiles with sites such as JobFox, MyJobHunter will have an difficult time surviving in this industry. It is true that job seekers want a one stop shop when it comes to finding their next job, and that employers want a site that provides candidates that are a better match. Employers are tired of being inundated with worthless resumes from unqualified job seekers.
